If you're into art, the River Arts District houses artist studios in former factory buildings while downtown is home to beautiful architecture and plenty of galleries to visit. While there's now a White Duck Taco Shop location in Charlotte, I still highly recommend stopping at the downtown Asheville location. Holding onto the rope helps a lot on the descent, but it’s still going to be more than some people will be comfortable with. You can enjoy many excellent views of the waterfall without going down that decline. If you’re up for little extra walk, follow the signs for the Forest Bathing Trail. This trail was made with the Japanese concept of forest bathing in mind.

It's a short two-hour drive from Charlotte, and it has pretty much everything you could want from a quiet weekend getaway. The Powerhouse Trail will take you back to the trailhead and parking lot, and from there you can retrace your steps to Grassy Creek Vineyard and Winery. The trail starts right next to the parking lot, and enters a hardwood forest. We walked from Grassy Creek Vineyard and Winery to Carter Falls. The hike included the stunning Carter Falls, an “Enchanted Pine Forest”, and a glimpse, deep in the woods, of Elkin’s industrial past.
Before or after your hike, enjoy a wine tasting or shop for a bottle or two to bring home. Trails are being planned to connect Grassy Creek with three other wineries. Elkin is approximately 15 minutes south of Stone Mountain State Park, and 20 minutes from the entrance of the Blue Ridge Parkway off Hwy 21 (heading towards Sparta). Its downtown is also situated along the Yadkin River, and offers a paddlers boat ramp and small camp site.
One last day trip from Elkin that we’d like to mention is Mount Airy. This fun town is also known as “Mayberry,” thanks to its connection to The Andy Griffith Show. The Surry Scenic Bikeway is another option for exploring the area’s beautiful countryside. With more than 500 miles of designated routes, the Surry Scenic Bikeway attracts avid cyclists looking to bike miles of rolling terrain. With so many trails to explore, you’ll need to fill your belly at some point.
